How do you handle “screen-free Sundays” — hit or miss?

Hi everyone,

I'd love to hear how you handle—or attempt to handle— screen-free Sundays in your household. I came up with the idea on a day when I really needed a break from the constant ping of tablets, phones, and TV. It was just one day, but I thought—why not try a full Sunday without screens?

Here's what I did:

  • I suggested we read books together, bake something silly, or go for a walk—even just around the block.
  • Set some gentle ground rules: no screens from breakfast to dinner, except for emergencies (like checking the train time when heading out).
  • Let the kids pick one activity each—inside or outside—that doesn't involve any screen.

But it was a mixed bag:

  • The younger one first resisted—“Mom, can I just check a video really quick?”—but eventually got into building Lego and doing a silly scavenger hunt.
  • The older one was glued to their phone for half the day, then fell asleep reading a book—so that was a win! But the resistance at the start was real.
  • And honestly, I needed more structure. Random board games worked for a while, but after lunch everyone wanted screens again.

So... I'm curious:

  • Do you even try screen-free days?
  • What works (or fails) in your home?
  • Have you found any creative swaps for screens that still keep kids (or you!) from saying, “But I'm bored”?

Let's share ideas—whether screen-free Sundays are a thing, or just a funny experiment gone sideways!

I suggest a Dutch course, so you don’t write in English on a Dutch forum.
