First Time Taking a Ferry with Kids – Any Tips?
Dit topic is gesloten. Viafora is een Nederlands forum en de voertaal is Nederlands zodat de berichten voor iedereen te volgen zijn
Hi everyone,
This summer we're planning to travel by ferry for the first time as a family. We've got two kids (ages 4 and 8), and while we're excited, we're also not quite sure what to expect.
I'd love to hear from other parents who've done ferry trips with young children. Was it smooth sailing or a bit stressful? Any tips that made the journey easier for you?
Some things I'm wondering about:
– Did your kids get seasick?
– Are there usually child-friendly spaces or activities on board?
– How do you handle food, rest, or long crossings?
We're hoping to make the trip as fun and relaxed as possible, so any practical advice or stories are more than welcome!
Thanks in advance 😊

if there is entertainment on board depends on the route and type of ship. A transporter for mainly freight does not have entertainment. The ones exploiting themselves as mini-cruise do.
But at that age, just walking around the ship can be entertaining already.
There is a lot to see an explore on a big ship. Or just look at the see.

Depends on the route you take. We went to England last year. We took the ferry from Dunkirk to Dover. That is only 2 hours. I recommend prioity boarding: first on the ship, first off. The Channel was calm so the crossing was fine, no one got sick. You can bring medicine for that. If you want to know what facilities there are on board, just check the website.

The ferry from where to where? It makes a great difference if you go to Texel or from Hoek van Holland to Harwich or a ten day Disney Cruise in the Caribean.

I did a 24h trip from Italy to Greece. Everything is really expensive. So bring enough of your own, that’s allowed. Take a cabin, for 2 and an airmatrass of your own. The kids where 3, 5, 7. They dif not get sick. There was entertainment and a pool. Lot’s of restaurants, shops. Ipad full battery. Netflixdownloads prepared.

If one of your kids is getting sick in the car easily, than there’s a big chance they will get sick if you go on a rough sea.
Seabands or cinarizine will help.

do they get travel sickness in a car? Then they might get it on a ship as well.
The best place when seasick is standing outside, keeping your eyes on the horizon.
At windforce 10 on a hooverspeed even the crew get seasick. And some other people don't.

Laying on the floor with eyes closed is better.
